As permitted by the Ministry of Communications, Government of India, under Notification No. 1047(A) dated 18 October 2018, a licence-free walkie talkie is a device intended for short-range communication, generally up to a maximum distance of approximately 900 metres to 1 kilometre, subject to the prescribed terms, conditions and technical parameters.
The following conditions apply:
- Frequency: The device should operate in the UHF frequency band of 446–446.2 MHz.
- Transmission Power: The maximum permitted transmission power is 0.5 watt.
- Equipment Type Approval: Each device must have the required Equipment Type Approval (ETA) issued by the Ministry of Communications, Government of India.
- Antenna: The antenna of the device should be integrated and fixed as part of the equipment and should not be modified or replaced in a manner that alters the approved specifications.
Any device not meeting the above-mentioned parameters, including the permitted communication range, may be considered a violation and may attract applicable penalties.
